House officer of the month, April 2023

Cyril Kamya, MBBCh

Name: Cyril Kamya, MBBCh

Medical school you attended: Cardiff University (United Kingdom)

Fellowship at UNMC: Advanced Gastrointestinal and Minimally Invasive Surgery and Bariatric Fellowship

Program director: Corrigan McBride, MD

How long is your training program and how long have you been at UNMC?

It is a one-year fellowship, and I have been here eight months.

What do you like the most about your training program? It’s an excellent program with exposure to a wide variety of advanced MIS and bariatric cases. A huge strength of the program is learning different techniques on how to perform bariatric surgery from our attendings, which will equip us to deal with challenging cases as we move into independent practice.

What challenges do you foresee in graduate medical education in the future?

In general, the competition for positions is increasing every year with more applicants. The effects of the COVID pandemic on medical training are still being felt, and moving forward it will be important to have strategies and innovative ways of working to minimize this impact should we get another surge.

List some accomplishments that you are proud of:

Changing careers, moving across the pond and pursuing surgical training. I certainly have no regrets and am excited for the future.

Tell us three things about you that others may not know:

  • Prior to surgical residency, I worked as an internal medicine doctor for five years.
  • I used to powerlift in residency.
  • I’m an avid Formula One racing fan.
