Walk and Roll ‘family’ sets new record

More than 400 community members gathered March 5 for the 19th annual Walk and Roll for Disabilities.

For Erin Brandenburg, the annual Meyer Foundation Walk and Roll for Disabilities is about family.

“It gives many people an opportunity to reach out and see this network of families and people who care about them,” said Brandenburg, a member of the Munroe-Meyer Institute’s recreational therapy staff. “It also creates opportunities to socialize and build a community.”

Meyer Foundation for Disabilities President Mary McHale speaks about the event to a member of the media.

That community – including the entire Brandenburg family — was out in force March 5 for the Walk and Roll this year. Brandenburg was one of a record number of approximately 400 attendees for the Walk & Roll, which was celebrating its 19th year. Community organization and partners, as well as teams of walkers, gathered together for photos ahead of the walk. Longtime walk participants such as the 501st Omaha Garrison were on hand, and children (and some adults) enjoyed face painting and balloon hats provided by clowns.

MMI staff, including director Karoly Mirnics, MD, PhD, were present to support the effort, which raises funds for adult recreational therapy programs at MMI.

Meyer Foundation President Mary McHale estimated that the event raised $38,000 in funds, well over its goal of $35,000.

McHale credited the record number of participants to the welcoming, community nature of the event.

“I believe that as more and more people attend for the first time, they come back and bring more people once they realize what a fun event it is,” she said. “The board of the Meyer Foundation for Disabilities always is grateful for our families who make the time to attend, who raise funds for the event and then show up to enjoy themselves.”
