Name: Andrew Nguyen, DO
Medical school you attended/year you graduated: University of North Texas Health Science Center – Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. I graduated in 2021.
Residency/fellowship at UNMC: Pediatrics
Program director: Nathaniel Goodrich, MD, and Lisa Sieczkowski, MD
How long is your training program and how long have you been at UNMC?
Pediatrics residency is three years, and I’m currently in my second year.
What do you like the most about your training program?
Definitely my co-residents!
What challenges do you foresee in graduate medical education in the future?
Making medical education as individualized as possible to utilize students’ strengths. There are students and residents with diverse backgrounds and experiences. A person with an engineering background may have a different approach to a problem than from someone who studied the arts. Both offer great insight and, in medicine, creates a space for creative problem solving.
List some accomplishments that you are proud of:
- I was the first person in my family to get into and graduate college and then get into medical school. Sí, se puede!
- Couples matching here with my wife, Bryndis Grissom, DO.
- My undergrad and graduate degrees are in biomedical engineering. My senior project was making a “mechanical leech” used for pediatric gynecologic surgeries which we got a provisional patent for!
Tell us three things about you that others may not know:
- I was in a breakdancing crew in high school. My B-boy name was A-Town.
- The original Jurassic Park is and always will be my favorite movie of all time.
- I’m half Mexican and Vietnamese. That being said, my favorite foods are pho and menudo, especially when it gets cold here in Nebraska!
