One in three families in Nebraska struggles to afford diapers. This February, members of the Emerging Professionals Program are asking the UNMC community to donate to a campuswide diaper and supply drive for local Omaha families.
The drive, which is currently underway, will run until Friday, Feb. 24, and is a partnership between EPP, the African American Black Alliance and the Nebraska Medicine Office of Community and Corporate Relations.
Donations from the drive will be collected and delivered to A Mother’s Love Inc. and the Nebraska Diaper Bank.
The mission of A Mother’s Love Inc., a non-profit organization co-founded by Nikeya Traynham, a medical assistant at Nebraska Medicine, is to love, support and empower young mothers and families. In 2022, the group helped 200 mothers and families through their doula and community baby showers.
“We’ve seen the relief that washes away from our clients faces when we provide them with even a small allotment of diapers and supplies,” Traynham said. “When that worry is pushed away, even for a little bit of time, it helps new moms and families create a better bond to their baby. We truly appreciate the med center community supporting us, our mission and local families here in Omaha.”
The Nebraska Diaper Bank, is a local non-profit in Omaha that provides diapers to low-income families while raising awareness of families having the basic health needs for diapers. In 2022, the diaper bank provided some 1,377,430 diapers to local families.
