Research/professional interests: Hematopathology and research in artificial intelligence
How I fell in love with hematopathology and artificial intelligence: As a youth, I learned computer programming and imagined I would grow up to be a computer programmer. In college, I discovered the life sciences and became interested in medicine. Once in medical school, I became attracted to pathology for many reasons, but the use of pattern recognition for problem-solving was a driving force. Within the field of pathology, I was drawn to hematopathology because of the extensive use of pattern recognition to incorporate a variety of ancillary studies into the diagnosis. During the years I have been in training, there has been significant progress in digital imaging of microscope slides. Naturally, my research interest is in bridging my two passions with the development of artificial intelligence algorithms to analyze tissue for various applications, such as diagnostic assistance and prognosis.
