“My mom started the tradition of inviting a person or two from work who would otherwise spend the holidays alone. We always had plenty of food, and sharing a meal with new people was always nice. Later, I started this tradition while going to SDSU in San Diego. My roommates and I decided to have Thanksgiving at our place and invited a few students who were spending the holidays alone. We had a student from England, one from Peru and a couple from the states. We all had a great time; it was a wonderful way to get to know other people’s traditions.

“Since then, I have continued this tradition from time to time. There are a lot of people out there who spend the holidays alone for one reason or another. It’s so easy to open your house to a co-worker or two, and the rewards you receive are tenfold. I have made great friends from this tradition. Many people already do the same thing, but for those who don’t, look around and see if someone you know could be spending the holidays alone and consider opening up your house and heart this holiday season.

“Next year, I would like to collaborate with some wonderful people from UNMC and Nebraska Medicine to create a holiday meal for students/colleagues who don’t have a place to go for the holidays. Until then, I hope more people will consider making this a part of their traditions and open up their homes this holiday season.”

Any help next year in starting a new tradition here at UNMC/Nebraska Med where we can create a Holiday Meal for our staff and students would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Lisa.
