How I fell in love with cardiothoracic surgery: When I was in college in Middlebury, Vermont, I shadowed a local rural surgeon and fell in love with surgery. During training, my choice to pursue thoracic surgery was driven by my interest in the wide variety of benign and malignant conditions that thoracic surgeons can help cure or alleviate. We do big open operations, such as lung transplants or extensive resections. But we also have a remarkable capability to perform many operations using elegant, minimally invasive techniques, and I find this very rewarding.
