Legislative fiscal analyst tours nursing, dentistry colleges

Suzanne Houlden, fiscal analyst for the Nebraska Legislature,  tours the UNMC College of Dentistry's clinical and virtual simulation lab with Merlyn Vogt, DDS, associate dean for student affairs, admissions and external relations.

Suzanne Houlden, fiscal analyst for the Nebraska Legislature, toured the UNMC Colleges of Nursing and Dentistry in late October.

Houlden met with UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, as well as other leaders from the colleges and the university.

Houlden said she wanted to visit the colleges for a more complete view of what UNMC has to offer.

“Seeing firsthand the technology, classrooms and other learning spaces is impressive in itself, but one also sees how much innovation and collaboration takes place, as well as the many services that are rendered,” she said. “In my role in the Legislative Fiscal Office, it is key — maybe even critical — when explaining the university’s requests to the Legislature to be able to provide context based on what I have seen and learned through these tours.”

Houlden said what impressed her most during the tour was the “unmistakable air of passion and commitment” from UNMC students, faculty and staff.

“They are eager to learn, teach and collaborate, and they seem unified in the mission to make sure health care is available throughout Nebraska,’ she said.
