Channing Bunch, director of the student life, inclusion and diversity office and human of UNMC:

“I did not choose this career path. I was more concerned with being a professional athlete or a coach. After two years of minor league baseball, I quit because it was a cutthroat experience, and my personality at the time was not about me but ‘team.’

“My first opportunity in higher education was as a compliance officer for my alma mater, in which the job entailed tracking eligibility and other compliances related to student-athletes. This position was challenging, and I decided it did not fit my young developing skill set and left to pursue another career in retail. After many years of searching and developing my craft, I found my passion at South High as a suspension-after-school paraprofessional. I loved working with at-risk youth and coaching them through their situations, attitudes and frustrations.

“Once I understood my developing skill set, I was fortunate to work at Creighton University Health Science Multicultural and Community Affairs, where my skill grew and impacted thousands of health professionals across the country. I have learned through life that there is a calling on you, but you must be open to what that may be.” #HumansOfUNMC
