Dr. Mammen inducted to surgeon educator academy

Joshua Mammen, MD, PhD

Joshua Mammen, MD, PhD, chief of the UNMC Division of Surgical Oncology, was inducted last month into the American College of Surgeons Academy of Master Surgeon Educators.

The induction, held in Chicago, places Dr. Mammen among a group of esteemed surgeon educators.

Dr. Mammen, who joined UNMC on March 1, 2021, was inducted as a member of the organization.

The academy works to advance the science and practice of education across all surgical specialties. Through dynamic programming, members have addressed the impact of the COVID pandemic on surgical training, physician wellness and disparities in surgical education, among several other initiatives.

“I am honored to be inducted into this group that includes many of my surgeon educator heroes,” he said. “I look forward to continuing to participate in the work to improve surgical education.”

Dr. Mammen, who holds an MBA and an MEd in additional to his doctoral degrees, has been the recipient of numerous awards during his training and career, including the 21st Surgical Enrichment Award from the Central Surgical Association Foundation in 2014 and the 2017 Commission on Cancer Outstanding Performance State Chair Award.

Dr. Mammen serves as a councilor of the American Board of Surgery, as well as a director of the Complex General Surgical Oncology Board. He is also the chair of the American Board of Surgery Training and Education Committee and the chair of the Complex General Surgical Oncology Board Continuous Certification Committee.

In addition to delivering the American Board of Surgery certifying examinations for general surgery and complex general surgical oncology, he is an examiner for the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa.

He is active with several other medical organizations, having been president of the Kansas Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, president of the Kansas City Surgical Society and president of the Kansas City Medical Society. He served as the chair of both the Young Fellows Association and the Resident and Associate Societies of the American College of Surgeons.
