Med center strong: Dr. Gold rolls up sleeve for flu shot

UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, receives a flu shot from College of Pharmacy student Vanessa Dinogan on Wednesday.

UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, took the opportunity Wednesday to roll up his sleeve and get his annual flu shot.

He received his vaccine through the UNMC College of Pharmacy’s Operation Immunization program.

“I am here today to get my flu shot,” he said, “and I’m so glad that I did.”

“We’ve talked a lot about COVID and many other things, but this is the time to roll up your sleeve to get your flu shot,” Dr. Gold said.

UNMC and Nebraska Medicine offer plenty of scheduling options to get the vaccine.

Operation Immunization

UNMC College of Pharmacy students run free flu vaccination clinics as part of the award-winning Operation Immunization program. UNMC students, faculty and staff are invited to get their flu shots at the College of Pharmacy’s PDD simulation labs (lower level southeast side) through Sept. 23, from 7 to 7:45 a.m. and 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Reservations are not required; please bring your UNMC ID badge.

The project is the result of a unique collaboration between the college, student health, family medicine, employee health and the UNMC chapter of the American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP).

In addition to providing hands-on training to the students and preventive health to the campus, Operation Immunization also is an ongoing research project. College of Pharmacy faculty are looking at ways to increase efficiencies and reduce costs in community immunization efforts.

Some key things to know about the Nebraska Medicine flu clinics:

  • For someone who works in a clinical area that has staff to administer the vaccine, get a flu shot in that clinical area.
  • For someone who does not work in a clinical area, see the flu clinic schedule below. No scheduling is required, and appointments will be on a walk-in basis. Fill out the influenza questionnaire on the Health Tracking System before arriving. Please bring your UNMC ID badge.
  • If someone got a flu shot at an alternative location such as a primary care provider, local pharmacy or grocery store, make sure to document that in the Health Tracking System.
  • For people who have health insurance through Nebraska Medicine, the vaccination should be covered free-of-charge. People with a different insurance provider can check to see if a co-pay is required for getting a flu shot at such places as a clinic or community pharmacy.
  • UNMC employees who completed the health risk assessment and are enrolled in its health insurance can receive a flu shot at any in-network pharmacy for free. If the employee didn’t complete the health risk assessment, normal co-pays will apply.
