Nursing announces accelerated degree partnerships

This month, the UNMC College of Nursing announced two new partnerships to offer accelerated nursing degree programs that will boost the nursing pipeline in Nebraska.

One is with Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings, the other with Great Plains Health in North Platte.

UNMC College of Nursing Dean Juliann Sebastian, PhD, said the partnerships offer students wonderful opportunities to fast-track a nursing career and get in-depth clinical experience. She said the college is proud to participate in the partnerships "to make nursing education more accessible and also enhance the BSN pipeline in our state."

Ken Zeiger, director of Student Services for the UNMC College of Nursing, said the partnerships will "impact our students' lives in a positive way by shaping education and career opportunities that also benefit our rural Nebraska communities and provide patients with the best in care."

    Dear Dean Sebastian,

Thank you for your great vision and action to bringing relevant nursing health services to these areas of great need and experiences for students to learn and become passionate about fulfilling caring for our fellow community members where care is needed "There".

I like to remind us all that care is at a place called "There", and we will touch the lives to improve our public visibility to our calling as nurses to heal with intentional presence. On my NIH-NCI sponsored multi-state clinical trial we have watched one of our surgeon partners on our clinical trial, Dr. Rudy Lackner, MD, and a Registered Nurse drive long distances often, each month, to these areas to provide care where others just don't go.

We are privileged to partner and offer our clinical trial to these patients and their family members because we are bigger than just here, and we want to be "There" for our patients as serious thoracic oncology care is needed everywhere.

Kudos to Dr. Lackner and Dr. David Berkheim who are team members in this 1st of a kind surgical clinical trial, sponsored by NIH-NCI, and Dr. Berkheim also driving to multiple clinical sites throughout the state of Nebraska to be present with patients with the nurses behind these surgeons to prepare and provide care not only in the surgery suite but where they live, a special place called "There", in our patients' community and home.

Kudos to the clinical research nurses on my NIH-NCI clinical trial who provide the post-operative rehabilitation exercise protocol and educational support at a place called There!

Also to the special dedicated nurses who play a vital role at a place called "There", supporting to make all things possible for the recovery of our non-small cell lung cancer patients. We admire you!
