Med center colleagues will join Out of the Darkness Walk

Med center colleagues will participate in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s Out of the Darkness Walk.

The event to raise funds and awareness will be Saturday, Sept. 17, at Stinson Park in Aksarben Village. The walk is free to attend, and donations are optional.

The team is sponsored by Nebraska Medicine and open to UNMC colleagues. Med center colleagues can join the team at this link.

Aug. 31 is the last day to register in order to also purchase a team T-shirt.

The med center team captain is Jen Sparrock of Nebraska Medicine’s Psychiatric Emergency Services Unit. Contact her by email with questions or to help with the event.

Sign-in starts at 11:30 a.m. on the day of the walk, and the walk itself begins at 1 p.m.

In addition, the med center will host a suicide loss impact display on Sept. 9 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Healing Hands statue in front of Hixson-Lied Center between Clarkson Hospital and Poynter Hall.

The display will involve pairs of shoes depicting the number of Nebraskans who lost their lives to suicide last year. People visiting the display will be able to write a message of hope or remembrance in sidewalk chalk around the display.
