Nicholas Borg, MD, is a new faculty member at UNMC.
- Name: Nicholas Borg, MD
- Hometown: Malta
- Current position: Assistant professor, UNMC Department of Neurosurgery, and neurological surgeon, Nebraska Medicine
Previous positions:
- Medical school at the University of Malta
- Internship at Ipswich Hospital NHS, England
- Fellowship in neurocritical care at the University of Cambridge
- Residency in neurosurgery at the University of Cambridge and at the University of Southhampton
- Fellowship in neurosurgery at Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Medicine
Professional and medical interests: I am mostly interested in vascular disorders of the brain and spine, with fellowship level training in open microvascular neurosurgery and endovascular or interventional neuroradiology techniques. In addition to providing general neurosurgical care, I specifically treat patients who have had a stroke or are at risk of one; patients who are at risk of hemorrhage from aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, dural arteriovenous fistulas and cavernous malformations; and patients with trigeminal neuralgia, headache and facial pain. In addition, I provide novel minimally-invasive therapies for high pressure in the brain (venous sinus stenting for idiopathic intracranial hypertension) or low pressure states (spontaneous intracranial hypotension due to CSF-venous fistula).
How did you fall in love with medicine: I am motivated by a good challenge, and nothing drives me more than providing safe, effective and novel treatment for complex disorders of the brain and spinal cord. Each ounce of tissue we handle may house a person's personality, memory, sense of humor or their ability to move or talk. The central nervous system is sacred and deserves to be treated as such. I like to think that any new skill or knowledge I can acquire might one day allow a patient to continue to be the best version of themselves. I find it very gratifying to see patients pull through their surgery and return to the activities they love.

- Congress of Neurological Surgeons

Three things people don’t know about me:
- Physical activity helps me de-stress and enjoy the world around me. Past endeavors have included cycling 100 miles in a day, dabbling in triathlons, sailing in the Mediterranean and scuba diving in the Indian Ocean.
- I describe my citizenship and my accent as "confused." I grew up in Malta and went to medical school there, then did residency in the U.K. and then moved to the U.S. for fellowship and to practice.
- My dog is far better behaved than my children. Work in progress.

Welcome, Dr Borg!
We need more folks with "confused" accents who could rebuild the ounce of tissue housing our sense of humo(u)r 🙂
Haha, thank you Gleb!
