Get ready, UNMC. Campus prepares for new students

Incoming UNMC students from every college, campus and program will be welcomed to campus with a variety of orientation activities highlighting campus resources, mental health supports and opportunities to make the most of their time at UNMC.

"The UNMC-wide New Student Orientation is an exciting opportunity for our incoming UNMC students to connect and engage with their peers, faculty and staff," said Tymaree Sing, coordinator in the UNMC Office of Academic Success. "The event highlights the importance of familiarizing and utilizing available UNMC student resources, advocating for their academic success early on, building relationships with peers and caring for classmates."

While UNMC colleges and programs organize their own orientation events for the fall, New Student Orientation through the UNMC Division of Student Success focuses on resources and skills that will support all UNMC students.

"Our efforts put students in a position to be fully ready to engage the academic rigors awaiting them on their first day of classes," said Philip Covington, EdD, associate vice chancellor of student success. "Our hope is that the activities help each learner to establish their identity as a UNMC student who is ready to learn, grow and thrive in a supportive environment."

The month of August will feature several activities:

Tours of the Center for Healthy Living: Wednesday, Aug. 17, 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Staff at the center will provide guided tours of the facility and highlight activities such as intramural sports and fitness classes. Any member of the med center community also is welcome.

New Student Orientation: Wednesday, Aug. 17, 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m.

Facilitated by the office of academic success, new student orientation takes place simultaneously for all incoming UNMC students. Presentations include a welcome video from campus leaders, an overview of resources available to students both at their campus location and online, and opportunities for students to connect with their peers.

Student Involvement Fair: Wednesday, Aug. 17, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

UNMC is home to more than 70 registered student organizations that provide an array of opportunities across its five campuses in Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney, Norfolk and Scottsbluff.

Following orientation, students can connect with student organization members and leadership and sign up for organizations and activities at the Truhlsen Event Center. Lunch will be provided.

Inter-Professional Education Orientation Event: Wednesday, Aug. 17, 1-5 p.m.

Students will attend a panel of current health professions to learn about the importance of interprofessional teamwork and communication and participate in a series of exercises that illustrate challenges to successful cooperation among team members in modern health care.

Tours of the Davis Global Center: Thursday, Aug. 18, 9-11 a.m.

Staff from the Davis Global Center will be available Thursday morning to give tours to incoming students.
