Services set for university’s Barbara Carter

A memorial service will be held July 22 for longtime University of Nebraska employee Barbara Carter, who died July 10 at age 69.

Carter, who worked in accounting, had been at the university for more than 40 years, holding positions at UNMC, the University of Nebraska at Omaha and the University of Nebraska payment services office.

Colleagues spoke warmly of her commitment to the university and UNMC.

"Barb's dedication to her profession and UNMC has impacted the campus, community and all those she knew," said Jeffrey Miller, assistant vice chancellor for business and finance. "Her service to the UNMC community and university for more than 40 years has been integral to the accomplishments achieved during her career. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family and friends during this time of sorrow."

Carter’s supervisor, Teresa Howell, said Carter was a valued member of the payment services team.

"She could always be counted on to get her work done," Howell said. "She was very proud of her service to the university. We will always remember her smile and what a great colleague we had. Our ‘family’ grieves with hers, and we will miss her greatly."

Services will be July 22 at Salem Baptist Church, 3131 Lake St. in Omaha. There will be a viewing from 10-11 a.m. and a celebration of life at 11 a.m. UNO, where Carter was most recently officed, also will lower the UNO flag on July 21 to honor her memory.

Barb was a great person both in and out of work. I was fortunate to have been her supervisor for two years. I will always remember her going through every coat in her house to help my sisters students when she would hear how they came to school without coats. I will also remember how much she loved her family and would light up when speaking about them. I loved the updates she would give on CJ’s basketball career or her grandkids lastest school stories.

I worked with Barb in the 80s, when business and finance was located where the Sorrell is now. She was nothing but class – always a smile on her face and always very helpful. Very sad to hear this news – UNMC has lost a fine employee and finer person.

I was and still am totally shocked to hear and read about this. Barbara, R.I.P. Barb as a lot of us knew her, always, always, always had a smile on her face. No matter where you saw her. Working with her for the last 28 1/2 years has and always will be a cherished memory for me. May you R.I. P. dear Barbara, and know you will always put a smile on everyone's face, now that you are an angel in God's glorious kingdom, and will always put a smile on our faces you have left behind. Always and forever,.
