The UNMC College of Medicine received grant and funding awards representing more than $2.3 million in new funding in May.

Ruxana Sadikot, MD, internal medicine-pulmonary, received a grant of $767,498 from DHHS/NIH/NHLBI for investigating potential immunotherapy by targeting host mitochondria to treat HIV-mycobacteria co-infection.

Rebecca Deegan, PhD, biochemistry and molecular biology, received a grant of $615,378 from DHHS/NIH/NCI to study the use of radioprotector in rectal cancer.

Carol Geary, PhD, pathology/microbiology, received a grant of $214,185 from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for the RECOVER post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 (PASC) electronic health record cohort study. Dr. Geary also received a grant of $8,702 from the University of Kansas Medical Center for a study identifying personalized risk of acute kidney injury with machine learning.

Matthew Zimmerman, PhD, cellular and integrative physiology, received a grant of $146,453 from Boys Town National Research Hospital for a study on the suppression of pathological spontaneous activity and inflammation in neuroHIV.

Lee Korshoj, PhD, pathology/microbiology, received a grant of $67,581 from DHHS/NIH/NINDS for a study on TREM2senses both pathogen- and damage-associated molecular patterns to promote S. aureus craniotomy infection.

Iraklis Pipinos, MD, surgery-vascular surgery, received a grant of $21,091 from Emory University for a study on how heterogeneity of satellite cell populations play a role in improvements in PAD after exercise therapy.

Don Coulter, MD, pediatrics-hematology/oncology, received a grant of $20,000 from the Public Health Institute for a work order per case reimbursement.

Sookyong Koh, MD, PhD, pediatrics-neurology, received a grant of $9,970 from the Pediatric Epilepsy Research Foundation for the Psychogenic Nonepileptic Seizures (PNES) Neurology Clinic Project.

Sean Figy, MD, surgery-plastic and reconstructive, received funding for a registry study of Avance nerve graft utilization, evaluations and outcomes in peripheral nerve injury repair.

Fedja Rochling, MBBCh, internal medicine-GI, received funding to study saroglitazar magnesium for treatment of primary biliary cholangitis.

Scott Koepsell, MD, PhD, pathology/microbiology, received funding for performance assessment of reformulated HemosIL ReadiPlasTin in comparison to HemosIL RecombiPlasTin 2G and HemosIL ReadiPlasTin in a representative clinical population.
