COM employee of the month

Tamra Nielson with her family -- husband Isaiah, son Zandyr and daughter, Emersyn -- as well as their dog, Garth, who (you can tell just by looking at him) clearly believes he is a cat.

College of Medicine employees of the month are nominated by college leaders. Tamra Nielson was nominated by Geoffrey Talmon, MD, who said Nielson has "definitely gone above and beyond – with regularity."

Name: Tamra Nielson

Title: Assessment coordinator

Hometown: Grand Island, Nebraska

Talk about your job and what you like best about it: I gather questions from faculty and build the exams for the first- and second-year medical students. Along with that, I also proctor the exams. I keep track of attendance, grades and averages during Phase 1 and Phase 2, and I send out evaluations for the students to complete during their blocks.

I have always loved math, so I enjoy creating the spreadsheets and gathering things for other projects as needed. The best part about my job is my co-workers. When things get hectic there is always someone to lend an ear or to help when needed.

List three things people may not know about you:

  • I was fortunate to know three of my great-grandparents very well growing up, and they were very influential in my life.
  • My extended family has a cabin on a lake that we try to visit as often as possible. Sometimes, there are close to 40 of us all there at one time.
  • My husband and I share our home with two kids, two cats and a dog (who is the size of a small horse but thinks he is a cat).
