The UNMC College of Nursing congratulations the following:
Ann Berger, PhD, professor of nursing, received the Oncology Nursing Society’s 2022 Distinguished Award for Consistent Contribution to Nursing Literature. The award recognizes a society member who makes consistent and significant contributions to oncology nursing literature. Dr. Berger was honored in April during the Oncology Nursing Society Congress in Los Angeles.
Windy Alonso, PhD, assistant professor of the UNMC College of Nursing, received the 2022 Symptom Science RIIG New Investigator Award from the Midwest Nursing Research Society. The award recognizes the contribution of a new investigator who has an outstanding research/research application trajectory in symptom science. Dr. Alonso’s research centers on understanding and improving the patient-reported outcomes of adults with heart failure. Also noteworthy during the MNRS 2022 Annual Research Conference:
- An abstract by UNMC College of Nursing student Morgan Staver, PhD, and co-author Tiffany Moore, PhD,titled, "The Role of Maternal Adverse Childhood Experiences," was selected as a distinguished abstract from among all abstracts submitted for a poster discussion presentation. The abstract was among 13 selected as distinguished abstracts for the conference.
- Amy Jude Hoffman, PhD, was elected as vice president of the MNRS from 2022-2024.
Shelly Amsberry, instructor on the Kearney Division, recently graduated with an EdD from the Bryan College of Health Sciences in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The following UNMC nursing students were recognized during the 2022 College of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Online Symposia:
- Abigail Carnazzo for her project titled: "Caregiver Coping in the Context of Metastatic Breast Cancer Treatment Decision Making." Her mentor is Robin Lally, PhD.
- Tam Nguyen for her project titled: "Reliability of a Revised Social Comparison Motive Scale in Two Different Adult Populations." Her mentor is Sheri Rowland, PhD.
- Kate Erwin for her project titled: "Sleep Disordered Breathing Screening in Hospitalized Patients with COPD Using Overnight Oximetry and End-Tidal Carbon Dioxide Monitoring: A Feasibility Study." Her mentor is Jen Miller, PhD.
- Kayla Johannes for her project titled: "Feasibility Study Performing Formative Evaluation on Two Components of a Pilot Study: Demand/Utilization and Practicality." Her mentor is Kate Fiandt, PhD.
The Multicultural Nursing Student Association received the Spring 2022 University of Nebraska Medical Center, Student Life Inclusion and Diversity Co-Collaboration Award. The award recognizes student organizations that have successfully worked together to sponsor or host an event or program that has benefited the UNMC campus community. Doctoral students Rasila Soumana Hama and Andrew Lim of MNSA attended the virtual award ceremony in April and received the award.
