Step-Up Omaha will return for summer 2022

UNMC's 2021 Step-Up Omaha interns

UNMC again will welcome participants from Step-Up Omaha, and departments on the Omaha campus can step forward if they have opportunities this summer for student interns.

Step-Up Omaha is a partnership involving the City of Omaha, the Empowerment Network and community donors and organizations. More than 100 businesses and organizations provide career exploration and job internship opportunities, which aim to benefit students from all parts of the community.

The seven-week summer program runs June 6 through Aug. 5. After two weeks of employment training, interns will report to their work sites on Monday, June 20.

This is the second year since the students returned following the pandemic. Last summer, UNMC hosted nine interns in departments that included the Center for Healthy Living, the McGoogan Library of Medicine, UNMC Human Resources, the Child Health Research Institute, the UNMC Department of Pediatrics, the UNMC Office of Academic Affairs and the UNMC Chancellor's Office.

“In 2021, the students were mentored one-on-one in the departments, because of the COVID safety protocols,” said Evelyn Grixby, UNMC program coordinator.

She is hoping for an equally successful year in 2022.

“We already have one new department, hospital medicine,” she said. “Of course, we would be excited to work with even more UNMC colleagues.”

For more information on hosting an intern and joining the effort to connect the youth in our community to career exploration and job internship opportunities, contact Grixby via email to discuss the program and request a "Job Request Form."

What are the ages you accept?

  2. UNMC Today editor says:

The participants have to be ages 16 to 21 to work on campus, and, if under the age of 19, parental consent is required. They would have to be at least age 18 to work in areas handling heavy equipment for OSHA purposes (i.e., groundskeeping)
