Women’s History Month RN Huddle episode released

Brandy Clarke, PhD

UNMC’s continuing nursing education program partnered with the Mid-America Mental Health Technology Transfer Center (MHTTC) for a special episode of RN Huddle in honor of Women’s History Month.

The podcast episode addressed the experiences of women in the health care workforce and featured Mid-America MHTTC's Brandy Clarke, PhD, and Hannah West, PhD.

Drs. Clarke and West, along with podcast co-host Renee Paulin, shared stories about juggling work with family, building fulfilling careers and the importance of mentors.

To hear about their experiences as women in the health care world, tune in to RN Huddle here.

Dr. Clarke is project director for Mid-America MHTTC, housed within the UNMC Munroe-Meyer Institute, where she is an associate professor and licensed psychologist. Dr. Clarke also is the director for the UNMC Office of Equity. Dr. West is a child and adolescent psychologist and board-certified behavior analyst at Sunflower Pediatric Behavioral Health and is a regional trainer for the Mid-America MHTTC.

Said Dr. Clarke, "I've had some really good mentors over the years. And not only the advice that they've given, but the modeling that they've showed about, ‘How do you create a career path that's both fulfilling and balanced?’ One of those was a very dear colleague of mine, Dr. Rachel Valleley, who unfortunately passed this last year, but has had a tremendous impact on my career path. And one of the things that she did very, very well for me was modeling how to create balance, and both having the career that you love and putting your family first."

Dr. West echoed Dr. Clarke’s sentiment on learning from women in leadership roles.

"We can learn so much from being with, doing the job and living life with these women who are in these leadership roles," Dr. West said. "Because they're able to share a little bit more of what it is like to be a woman in the workforce and to really balance these often competing roles."
