Women’s History Month: Events continue this week

Women’s History Month 2022 marks the first year that UNMC and Nebraska Medicine have offered cohesive cultural programming and engagement opportunities.

The programming will continue with panel representation from UNMC and Nebraska Medicine's executive leadership team today and Thursday, March 31. Other events include an interactive engagement activity and an author reading sponsored by the McGoogan Health Sciences Library, both on Wednesday, March 30.

Today: UNMC Then & Now. Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, will introduce the program, which kicks off a presentation on "Pioneering Female Health Professionals at UNMC," given by Emily Brush, JD. The presentation includes interviews that shed light on UNMC women who led meaningful and accomplished careers during a difficult era for female scientists and health career professionals. The event includes a presentation about present-day initiatives and groups that have since taken the baton. The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Nebraska Medicine and UNMC chief diversity officers. They will be joined on the panel by Nebraska Medicine and UNMC’s women-focused employee resource group executive leaders and UNMC’s director of equity. The panel will focus on how the med center, as a dual institution, could best leverage its groups and resources to continue to progress in the area of gender equity. The webinar will run from noon to 1 p.m. Register online.

Wednesday, March 30: "Joy Jar Kit" activity from the library’s inclusion corner. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., pick up a "Joy Jar Kit" in the McGoogan Library's inclusion corner (northeast corner of the sixth floor). Participants can pick a woman to show appreciation beyond Women's History Month. Start the joy jar for her with 10 notes of appreciation, then give it to her and tell her why she was chosen. Encourage her to continue to fill it with affirmations that bring her up when she needs it.

Wednesday, March 30: Amy Haddad, PhD, author of "An Otherwise Healthy Woman." Dr. Haddad will read from and discuss her work. She is a poet, nurse and educator at Creighton University, where she is professor emerita. The University of Nebraska Press is publishing her first poetry collection, "An Otherwise Healthy Woman," in 2022. Dr. Haddad is an alumnae of the UNMC College of Nursing. The library plans to give away 50 of her books to students in attendance. Watch her virtual reading at noon and register here.

Thursday, March 31: "Picture a Scientist" documentary and UNMC leader discussion panel. The documentary helps viewers gain a deeper understanding of the collective cost of sexism within science and why it is important for individuals and institutions to become advocates for diverse representation, access and inclusion in STEM. UNMC executive leaders will have an institution-based discussion inspired by some of the film’s themes. Panel guests include Sheritta Strong, MD, assistant vice chancellor of inclusion, Laura Bilek, PhD, associate dean for research in the UNMC College of Public Health, Christopher Shaffer, PharmD, PhD, associate dean for UNMC College of Pharmacy, Nicole Rodriguez, PhD, director of the Munroe-Meyer Institute's early intervention program, and Dan Shipp, EdD, vice chancellor of strategic initiatives. The discussion runs from noon to 1:30 p.m. Register online.
