Women’s History Month: ‘The Art of Leading as a Woman’

UNMC and Nebraska Medicine's Women's History Month events continue today with a presentation by Sasha Shillcutt, MD, on "The Art of Leading as a Woman."

Dr. Shillcutt is a professor and the vice chair of strategy in the UNMC Department of Anesthesiology. She will discuss how women in the workplace can successfully lead teams and review leadership backlash women may face in the workplace, along with strategies to overcome it. Dr. Shillcutt will review ways women can support one another to lead authentically in their workspaces.

The presentation will be followed with a panel discussion featuring some of the executive leadership team members from RISE, a new Nebraska Medicine employee resource group. Shanda Ross, Nebraska Medicine’s director of engagement, outreach and belonging, will moderate the discussion.

Dr. Shillcutt is founder and CEO of Brave Enough, as well as a well-published researcher in cardiac anesthesiology and an author and international speaker on gender equity.

Her greatest passion is empowering and encouraging others to achieve wellbeing in their professional and personal lives. She speaks frequently to executives and leaders on the topics of professional resilience and gender equity. Her TEDx talk titled "Resilience: The Art of Failing Forward" has been viewed by thousands of people.

Her writing has been published in both the New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA. She leads conferences and retreats for professional women through her organization, Brave Enough. Her first book, "Between Grit and Grace: How to be Feminine and Formidable," has sold thousands of copies, and her second book, "Brave Boundaries," will be released this fall.
