“UNMC is definitely a global leader in many things,” Douglas County Commissioner Roger Garcia said as he finished his tour of the iEXCEL program in the Davis Global Center at UNMC.

Garcia spent part of the afternoon of Feb. 10 touring the rare book collection at the McGoogan Health Sciences Library and Wigton Heritage Center before visiting the Davis Global Center to learn about the future of health professions education.

While there, he observed C-STARS military health care professionals as they worked through a simulation in which they had to don personal protective equipment and care for a patient (in the form of a human manikin simulator) with a highly infectious disease.

He also watched a holographic image of UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, describe the different modalities, including augmented and virtual reality scenarios, to human simulators and task trainers, available to students, residents, physicians and fellows to use as part of their training.

"The kind of technology that is being utilized at UNMC is a marvel to see, and it's being used to train the next generation of medical professionals, as well as first responders and military personnel. We clearly have a gem in our community that we should all be proud of," Garcia said.
