Mary Ann Andersen, instructor at the UNMC College of Nursing Northern Division, died Feb. 3 at the age of 59. Andersen held a faculty appointment since 2013 and worked as an advanced practice registered nurse in psychiatric and mental health at Oasis Counseling in Norfolk.
Visitation will be today from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Norfolk, 1300 W. Benjamin Ave., where the funeral services also will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 10:30 a.m.
Prior to serving at UNMC, she served as a nursing instructor for psychiatric clinicals at the Norfolk Regional Center for the Northeast Community College associate degree in nursing program from 2003 to 2011.
Andersen was passionate about mental health, was involved in the community and received numerous awards.
“Mary was an amazing member of our faculty team and an amazing person,” said Liane Connelly, PhD, dean of the Northern Division. “She was passionate about teaching and cared deeply about her students and their stiving for success as future nursing students. She was particularly proud of the students who she helped on the road to induction as members of our nursing honor society, Sigma Theta Tau. She is deeply missed by students, faculty and staff.”
Andersen earned her bachelor’s in nursing in 1993 and a master’s degree in psychiatric and mental health nursing in 2002, both at UNMC.
