State Sen. Tony Vargas recently visited the lab of Todd Wyatt, PhD, professor in the UNMC Department of Environmental, Agricultural and Occupational Health in the College of Public Health and also in the pulmonary division within the UNMC College of Medicine. Throughout the pandemic, Dr. Wyatt has directed research into the pulmonary effects of COVID-19. Vargas, who lost his father to COVID-19, said he wanted to learn more about COVID-19 research at UNMC and research ahead of the next pandemic. "It is truly a marathon when we're talking about health care, innovation and research," said Vargas, who represents downtown and South Omaha in the Nebraska Legislature. "This is the long-term research that leads to really big advances in medicine and advancements in preventative health care."
