New World-Herald publisher tours med center

Ava Thomas (center), publisher of the Lincoln Journal Star and Omaha World-Herald, toured the Davis Global Center with Vice Chancellor for External Relations Bob Bartee, at right, and Michael Hollins, director of community and business engagement with iEXCEL.

Ava Thomas, president and publisher of the Lincoln Journal Star and Omaha World-Herald and group publisher for Lee Enterprises in Nebraska and Iowa, recently toured the medical center.

Thomas met with UNMC leadership, including Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, and took part in an informational meeting on rural health. She also visited the Davis Global Center on a tour hosted by Michael Hollins, director of community and business engagement with iEXCEL, and Bob Bartee, vice chancellor for external relations.

"I pride myself on doing my homework," Thomas said, "but I was not prepared for the depth and breadth of the center. It’s extraordinary."

When asked what the UNMC community should know about the Journal Star and World-Herald, she responded that people will think of them as more than just "the newspaper," if they don't already.

She likened Lee Enterprises’ digital reach to the UNMC 500-mile campus, as she’d just seen in the Davis Global Center: "Through our robust portfolio of digital, mobile, social and print products, we educate, inform and inspire people not just statewide – but across the country. We are storytellers, and I look forward to telling UNMC’s story — as it’s one that should make all Nebraskans proud."
