Lucie Case, research nurse in the UNMC Division of Rheumatology and Immunology, will be retiring from UNMC on Dec. 31.

Case first joined UNMC in 1975 in the department of human resources. Although she left and returned twice, she has been at the med center — including working at the Nebraska Medical Center as a nurse — for approximately 40 years, about 20 of them in the rheumatology division. She received her BSN from the UNMC College of Nursing in 2003.
She has been serving in her current role since 2014.
"Dr. (James) O’Dell had contacted me, said they needed a nurse and asked me if I would ‘come back home,’" she said. "It’s been a long and winding road for sure."
James O’Dell, MD, the division chair, said it is impossible to overstate the impact that Case has had over her four decades at the medical center.
"Lucie was the very first employee of the brand-new rheumatology division in 1982," he said. "Over the next decade plus she did anything and everything needed to make us successful, all with extraordinary skill and remarkable efficiency. She left a huge hole when she finished RN training, at the top of her class, and began her RN ICU and transplant career.
"When we got her to come back home to rheumatology as our head RN, it was one of the best days in the history of rheumatology. With her retirement, we will again have a huge hole."
Congratulations on your retirement Lucie! I have many fond memories of working with you in Internal Medicine. You will be missed.

I met Lucie when I worked in Rheumatology in 1984. The "extraordinary skill and remarkable efficiency" stated above puts it mildly. She is one of those people who would do anything for you if you asked. I am so grateful to call her my friend. Congratulations on your retirement!!!
Lucie-I am SO going to miss working beside you! You have been such a great role model since I started here, and its going to be very different not seeing you. I will not be selfish-it's time for your family to enjoy you! I am very happy for you and this next chapter (but sad for us).
Lucie and I became acquainted first when I was a grad student in 1987 and then when I worked in Rheumatology. She is the best, caring and accurate! Rheumatology will be missing an important component when she retires.
