Honoring our veterans

Sierah Samway, US Army National Guard, D1 Student

What Veterans Day means to me: Veterans Day means reflecting on how much I have learned and grown since I joined, and having pride in the person I am today because of the experiences I had and the soldiers I served next to.

Ernie Sigler, US Army Dental Corps, Assistant Professor

What I remember about the day I enlisted: On September 14, 1975, I arrived in Tacoma, Washington and I reported to Madigan Army Medical Center along with seven other dentists for what I thought would be a two-year assignment. After thirty years and eight assignments, I retired on July 30, 2005 from Fort Riley, Kansas and started my second career at UNMC.

What Veterans Day means to me: Veterans Day is a great time to reflect on all thew soldiers, airmen, sailors, marines and coast guardsmen who have served and defended our great country, many laying their lives and paying the ultimate sacrifice. One of the great blessings of my life has been the opportunity to be part of something bigger than myself and to serve my country.

Jennifer Kallio, US Army Reserve, Assistant Professor

What I remember about the day I enlisted: The day I enlisted I felt a deep commitment to myself, a connection to my family that had served across many generations, and my country. What Veterans Day means to me: To me, Veterans Day is not about me, but gratitude for those that have served, their families, and those currently serving.

Greg Bennett, US Navy, Assistant Professor

In my picture, I am in the plane about to take off and leave Afghanistan.

What Veterans Day means to me: Veterans Day is a great reminder to us all just how many of our friends, family, coworkers and neighbors have chosen to serve in our armed forces.
