UNMC for the record

UNMC students participate in the sponsored "Conversation with Senator Megan Hunt" event.

Sen. Megan Hunt discusses student advocacy

On Oct. 27, UNMC’s Student Senate, in partnership with UNMC Student Delegates and the UNMC AMA Student Chapter, sponsored a "Conversation with Senator Megan Hunt" event.

The Omaha senator discussed her background, her path to the Legislature, and what subjects animate her passion for policy. She discussed legislation she plans to introduce next session, including the prohibition of conversion therapy and broadening of SNAP benefit eligibility.

Sen. Hunt answered questions from students regarding the influence of national, state and local medical associations in moving the needle in the Unicameral, how the body operates when facing polarizing issues and the current challenges related to incarceration in Nebraska.

Sen. Hunt encouraged students to participate in the legislative process by testifying before the Unicameral and writing to senators about bills students feel passionately about. Attendees said Sen. Hunt was encouraging about the power of student voices and advocacy to impact policy.
