Cancer center offers pilot program funding opportunity

The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center

The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center (BCC) is pleased to announce the BCC Pilot Projects Program 2021 request for applications. The BCC Pilot Projects Program aims to foster the development of promising early-stage cancer research projects and encourage their transition to securing external funding.

One-year pilot project awards of up to $50,000 will be made for single-principal investigator proposals. Developmental awards of up to $75,000 for projects involving two principal investigators and up to $100,000 for SPORE/P01/U01-type projects involving three principal investigators are also being offered.

"The aim is to encourage proposals where multiple PIs collaborate on a project," said Kenneth Cowan, MD, PhD, director and physician-in-chief of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. "I strongly encourage all Buffett Cancer Center members to consider applying for these pilot projects, which are made possible by funds raised by the Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska."

Eligible investigators include all University of Nebraska faculty members with an academic appointment at or above the level of Instructor.

Proposals for one-year pilot projects in cancer research will be accepted for consideration in eight funding target areas. Research programs and areas of research targeted are:

  • The Cancer Biology Program;
  • The Targets, Modulators and Delivery Program;
  • The Gastrointestinal Cancer Program;
  • Cancer Prevention and Control;
  • Pediatric Cancer;
  • The Multiple Myeloma Program;
  • Clinical and/or Translational Cancer Research; and
  • Community Outreach and Engagement.

Proposals must be prepared using the application template and sent as a single, complete PDF via email. The deadline to submit applications is 11:59 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Nov. 9. Complete application guidelines, eligibility requirements and an editable application are available here.
