Pharmacist interns from the UNMC College of Pharmacy are once again administering free flu vaccinations to their fellow students, faculty and staff as part of their Operation Immunization project.
The groundbreaking annual project features a novel process in which pharmacy students run the vaccination clinics and deliver the shots. The project is the result of a unique collaboration between the college, student health, family medicine, employee health and the UNMC chapter of the American Pharmacists Association — Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP).
Operation Immunization clinics are a separate effort from other on-site clinics at the medical center and Bellevue Medical Center, as previously detailed in UNMC Today.
The students train and work with a multidisciplinary team in order to bring the project to life.
"Lots of people talk about interprofessional collaboration — these pharmacist interns actually do it every day in clinic," said Ally Dering-Anderson, PharmD, clinical associate professor of pharmacy practice.
In addition to providing hands-on training to the students and preventive health to the campus, "Operation Immunization" also is an ongoing research project. College of Pharmacy faculty are looking at ways to increase efficiencies and reduce costs, in community immunization efforts.
Campus community members are welcome to walk in to get their flu shots at the Lozier Center for Pharmacy Sciences and Education at the dates and times below (bring your ID badge). Look for the line to the clinic on the first floor at the foot of the main staircase.

- Today: 7-8:30 a.m. or 3-5 p.m.
- Friday, Sept. 17: 7-8:30 a.m. or 3-5 p.m.
- Monday, Sept. 20: 7-8 a.m. or 4:30-6 p.m.
- Tuesday, Sept. 21: 4:30-6 p.m.
- Wednesday, Sept. 22: 7-8 a.m. or 3-5 p.m.
- Thursday, Sept. 23: 7-8:30 a.m. or 3-5 p.m.
- Friday, Sept. 24: 7-8:30 a.m. or 3-5 p.m.
