Wigton Heritage Center now open for tours for the UNMC and Nebraska Medicine community
The Wigton Heritage Center is now open for tours to the UNMC and Nebraska Medicine community.
Both in-person and virtual tours of the exhibits featured in the Wigton Heritage Center, which showcase UNMC and Nebraska Medicine’s rich history, are available. Library guides will offer information beyond what can be read on the panels accompanying the exhibits, including many interesting nuggets of information. Visitors, even virtually, can ask questions in real time and interact with library guides — and even suggest ideas for the next exhibition rotation.

Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center funding one-year pilot grants
The Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center (FPBCC) Community Outreach & Engagement (COE) seeks to fund one-year pilot grants of $3,000 to $5,000 to support new and existing projects facilitating cancer prevention and control activities conducted by a community organization. The overall goal is to provide the resources needed to support vital community activities to reduce the cancer burden and eliminate cancer health disparities in Nebraska.
The grant deadline is Oct. 30, with notice of award on Nov. 30 and a project period from Jan. 1-Dec. 31. Projects must:
- Align with the FPBCC COE mission: "COE works to reduce the cancer burden, promote health equity, and eliminate cancer health disparities in Nebraska through collaboration with community, clinical and public health partners."
- Include cancer prevention and control activities
- Address cancer health disparities
Library's open house event draws approximately 300 people
The McGoogan Health Science Library "Library and Partners Open House" event drew approximately 300 visitors during two sessions on Aug. 24 and 27. The event, held on levels six, seven and eight of Wittson Hall, spotlighted the newly renovated space and the services the library offers.

Non-profit names Dr. Khan, Warren among its '50 over 50' top achievers
The Bloc, a philanthropic non-profit organization based in Lincoln, is honoring Ali Khan, MD, MPH, dean of the UNMC College of Public Health, and Aileen Warren, assistant vice chancellor and director of the UNMC Office of Human Resources, for their inspiring accomplishments and community impact.
Dr. Khan and Warren will receive The Bloc’s inaugural 50 Over 50 Awards on Sept. 25. The 50 Over 50 Awards recognizes top achievers in five categories — nonprofit, innovation, business, community and health care whose contributions make Nebraska a great state.
UNMC’s Christen inducted into Omaha Press Club Hall of Fame
Chris Christen, UNMC’s senior manager of creative services, will be among six journalists inducted on Saturday, Sept. 18 into the Omaha Press Club Hall of Fame.
Todd Andrews, director of integrated communications for the Salvation Army of Omaha, will emcee the 12th annual event, which begins with a 5:30 p.m. reception followed by dinner and the induction ceremonies.
The event is open to the public. Cost is $50 for Press Club members and $60 for non-members. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 402-345-8008, via email or by visiting the OPC website (click the RSVP button).
UNMC's Staver awarded Buffett Institute grant
Morgan Staver, a UNMC doctoral student in nursing, has been awarded a one-year grant through a pioneering fellowship program from the Buffett Early Childhood Institute. The Buffett Institute Graduate Scholars Program provides financial support and mentoring and is designed to foster the growth of diverse, exceptional graduate students conducting research about young children and their families.
Staver, one of three scholars this year, will receive up to $25,000 to support her research on maternal distress in mothers of infants in the neonatal intensive care unit. Her project will examine examine depression, anxiety and trauma experiences in mothers. Her work has the potential to assist with identifying women who would benefit from clinical intervention and referral to treatment, which would improve the lives of the mother, her infant and their family.
Nursing student research is on display through Sept. 10
Students in the UNMC College of Nursing’s Accelerated Class of 2021 invite the campus to see its current display titled "The Art of Nursing" in the atrium of the Center for Nursing Science building. Students were asked to find or create an image that symbolizes current impression of nursing and/or vision of their role as a future nurse in their nursing leadership course over the summer. The display includes their chosen image, a description of why the image was chosen and a picture of the student. It’s a reminder of the importance of the art of nursing during these challenging times. The display can be viewed through Sept. 10.
