REframe Series aims to inspire actionable change

UNMC Faculty Development is offering a new series of virtual events designed to transform how participants view the world and to inspire actionable change.

The REframe Series, which will begin on Aug. 26, offers interactive workshops and development opportunities presented by campus and national experts in diversity, equity and inclusion. The topics chosen are major trends within education and leadership development training across the nation.

"We created the REframe Series to empower faculty and staff and provide them with the tools they need to better collaborate, accelerate change and personalize the learning environment for growth," said Linda Love, EdD, director of faculty development.

The series, also supported by the UNMC Office of Inclusion and Equity, will launch on Aug. 26 with an interactive, two-part presentation by Amy Caruso Brown, MD, of SUNY Upstate Medical University.

Dr. Caruso Brown has developed a comprehensive checklist to assess bias within medical education curriculum. During the workshop, participants will learn about the impact of bias in health care education content, identify the challenges to preventing bias from reaching learnersand examine a portion of their own content using the checklist.

Assistant vice chancellor for inclusion, Sheritta Strong, MD, said faculty should consider attending the workshop.

"Examining the content we present to our learners is a critical first step in preventing bias, both implicit and explicit, from impacting our learners and, ultimately, the care of our patients," Dr. Strong said.

Dr. Caruso Brown’s presentation will be the first of eight virtual events spanning from August until June 2022. The series continues with presentations by other highly sought-after national speakers on diverse recruitment practices, equitable faculty workloads and bystander intervention. Also featured is a session on privilege presented by UNMC’s own expertly trained faculty and staff.

"This series not only reaffirms UNMC’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion but invites our community to turn that commitment into action," said Brandy Clarke, PhD, director of equity.

Dr. Love agreed.

"The series is designed to help participants contribute to sustained organizational change for a more equitable future in health science education while elevating UNMC’s efforts to obtain inclusive excellence," Dr. Love said.
