Mariam Malik is a third-year dental student in the UNMC College of Dentistry Advanced Standing Dental Program.
I am from Lahore, one of the biggest cities in Pakistan. I went to high school, college and dental school in Lahore. After I relocated to Texas, I completed my dental boards and dental assistant certification. I worked as a dental assistant to learn about dental practice in the United States. My assisting work provided me with a great prospective about health care and the dental environment in the United States. Through conversations with various dental specialists, I learned about advanced cases, ethics regulations and different specializations. Every day was a new experience for me; I concentrated on learning a valuable lesson from each patient case.
Why did you decide to pursue dentistry?
Since I was young, I've had a desire to serve people. I was quite unaware of my path until I discovered the dental subset of health care. I knew dentistry was right decision for me as I had a natural flair towards arts and an innate curiosity for the sciences. The combination of artistic skills, strong scientific knowledge and countless opportunities to help others led me to want to become a dentist. I have always been intrigued by the role dentistry plays in a community's well-being. In future, I would like to work in underdeveloped communities to increase awareness of dental health and treat patients who don’t have access to treatment.
About me:
- My husband and I have a six-year-old daughter. My family has been a great support for me throughout my dental school application process and I can’t imagine a day without them. In our free time, we like to travel, explore new places and make great family memories.
- In my free time, I volunteer for a nonprofit organization based in Pakistan which helps underprivileged children receive an education. I enjoy cooking and trying new cuisines.
- After graduation, I would like to work as general dentist to get experience in dental practice. After that, I would like to specialize in the field of community dentistry and work as dentist for UNICEF.
What are some of your favorite things about UNMC?
During my short time at UNMC, I have had some great experiences. The faculty have been especially supportive and helpful. I would like to recognize Dr. Julie Marshall, the director of the advanced standing program. She has provided me with all the help and guidance that we needed to settle here. She has been the best mentor one could ask for because her door is always open. I get the best advice from her for both my personal and educational affairs.
