Matthew Mormino, MD, receives Wigton Award

Matthew Mormino, MD, has received the “Robert S. Wigton, MD, Most Valuable Program Director Award. The award, presented by the UNMC Office of Graduate Medical Education, is bestowed on residency program directors who demonstrate outstanding leadership and service.

The award is named after retired UNMC physician, Robert Wigton, MD, who led the Office of Graduate Medical Education for 37 years.

Dr. Mormino, the Herman Frank Johnson, MD, Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, has been the residency program director in orthopedic surgery since 2004. The award recognizes his outstanding attributes in leading the orthopedic residency program.

He said he was happy to receive the award.

“The GMEC community at UNMC has always been such a strong resource and to be recognized by them is truly an honor,” Dr. Mormino said. “As a program director for nearly 20 years I have had much support from excellent program coordinators who have made this job much more enjoyable, and I would like to thank them as well.”

UNMC’s Justin Siebler, MD, associate professor and chief of orthopaedic trauma, called Dr. Mormino “a paragon of excellence, compassion, professionalism and scholarship for graduate medical students during the most crucial stage of their professional development.”
