Northwall Plaza dedication available online today

The dedication of the William H. Northwall, MD Plaza will be held virtually at 6 p.m. today.

The UNMC community is invited to the dedication of the William H. Northwall, MD Plaza.

The celebration today will be online for the Northwall Plaza, located between Wittson and Poynter Halls, and an art sculpture by New York artist Jenny Sabin. The 6 p.m. virtual ceremony is available via the UNMC McGoogan Health Sciences Library.

“The Northwall Plaza will provide a calming respite and a place of introspection and reflection for UNMC students, faculty, staff, alumni and visitors. This magnificent campus addition is an important addition to our Healing Arts program,” said UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD. “We are grateful to Dr. Northwall and his family for their generosity in helping transform this outdoor space.”

The Northwall Plaza complements the adjacent Wigton Heritage Center, which will be formally dedicated later this month and serve as the new welcome center for UNMC.

An Omaha native, Dr. Northwall is a 1967 graduate of the UNMC College of Medicine. He practiced in Kearney, Nebraska, from 1972 until 1998 and is now retired in St. Petersburg, Florida. He will celebrate the dedication in Omaha with his wife, Ethel Merrigan, and members of the Northwall family.

During the ceremony, Sabin will discuss her one-of-a-kind sculpture, titled “Convergence.” Sabin, whose art intersects architecture and science, says the towering sculpture celebrates people coming together from around the world, converging. The sculpture is the latest addition to the medical center’s Healing Arts program, designed to enhance the healing environment through art. The sculpture was made possible by the Nebraska Arts Council, which facilitated the state 1% for Art project.
