Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital has expanded its Omaha campus with the March opening of a new outpatient clinic. The Madonna Physicians Clinic will help fill community needs for physiatry care while enhancing the UNMC Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation’s resident education and training, as well as research opportunities.
The 7,800-square-foot clinic features a patient check-in and waiting area, dedicated physician workspace and eight exam rooms equipped with the latest technology for vision services, concussion assessments and follow-up appointments.
Residents have access to ultrasound technology for guided injections. Under the guidance of UNMC faculty, they will have opportunities to perform electrodiagnostic procedures including nerve conduction studies and electromyography.
“This dedicated space gives residents the opportunity to train, learn and research in a spacious environment with examination rooms that are fully equipped with state-of-the art diagnostic equipment,” said Samuel Bierner, MD, chair of the UNMC Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and medical director at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital.
Donald Schmidt, Madonna’s vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer, said the clinic meets the needs of patients with neurologic or other physically limiting conditions as they work toward leading full, independent lives.
Madonna’s Omaha Campus serves as the primary training hospital for UNMC’s physical medicine and rehabilitation residency program. Sponsored by Madonna, the program was launched in 2018. Michael Weaver, DO, serves as the residency program director in the UNMC Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Fourteen residents are currently part of the residency program, the only one in Nebraska and the first of its kind in a five-state upper Midwest region. The program offers resident physiatrists the opportunity to participate in the care of pediatric and adult patients recovering from stroke, spinal cord injury, brain injury and other complex medical issues.
