New allergy, immunology fellowship approved to meet growing demand

The University of Nebraska Medical Center has received approval from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to create a fellowship program in allergy and immunology.

The two-year fellowship, which will begin July 1, 2022, is open to residents and physicians nationwide who graduated from an ACGME-accredited residency program in internal medicine, pediatrics or medicine-pediatrics.

The fellowship will provide specialty training in allergy and immunology conditions including allergies, asthma, drug, food and environmental allergies, allergic skin diseases such as contact dermatitis, hives and eczema and immune system diseases, primarily immunodeficiencies.

Fellows will be trained in adult and pediatrics, said Sara May, MD, assistant professor in UNMC’s Department of Internal Medicine, Allergy and Immunology Division, and allergist at Nebraska Medicine.

“Allergic disease are quite common and are increasing,” said Dr. May, program director of the fellowship. “Demand for the specialty is high and the fellowship will help alleviate a shortage of physicians trained in this specialty. There are no fulltime allergists west of Lincoln other than those who hold satellite clinics. The fellowship will fill the gap in allergy and immunology training in Nebraska. We’re excited and thankful for the support of leaders at Nebraska Medicine, Children’s Hospital & Medical Center and the Omaha VA, where fellows will see patients.”

She said a previous shared fellowship program at Creighton University but closed in 2015.

Two fellows will be recruited for the program for the first year. The fellowship also will expand educational capacity for additional learning including medical students, resident physicians and fellows.

Applications for the fellowships are being taken from Aug. 1 through Oct. 31. Physicians and resident physicians interested in applying must go through the Electronic Residency Application Service® and can contact Whitney Dailey at whitney.dailey@unmc.edu or 402.559.4088 for information.
