Grand Rounds lectureship to honor James Lane, MD

The UNMC Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism is establishing the annual James Lane, MD, Memorial Grand Rounds.

The inaugural event will be at noon on April 23. It will feature Robert Abraham Gabbay, MD, PhD, chief scientific and medical officer of the American Diabetes Association and associate professor at Harvard Medical School, who will speak on “Improving Diabetes Care: A Roadmap to Better Chronic Care.” The event will be held on Zoom.

In 2007, Dr. Lane was named the inaugural UNMC/Nebraska Medicine Diabetes Center director. He served as the endocrinology fellowship director, and he also was a member of the UNMC Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism faculty from 1998 until 2011.

“After Dr. Lane died at age 58 of a glioblastoma, we and his family felt this annual event would be a fitting reminder of his legacy and his passion for improving diabetes care for all patients directly and indirectly, by teaching the next generation of students and fellows,” said Jennifer Larsen, MD, vice chancellor for research. “In Dr. Lane’s honor, the UNMC Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism Division is establishing a new James Lane, MD, Lectureship.”

Dr. Lane’s particular interest was in improving diabetes systems of care including, and particularly, the transition of care that occurs for adolescents with diabetes as they become independent. Dr. Gabbay was chosen as the initial speaker for the series, event organizers said, because of his expertise in that area.
