Dr. Olsen named outstanding dean by national group

The American Pharmacists Association (APhA) Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) has named Keith Olsen, PharmD, dean of the UNMC College of Pharmacy, winner of its 2021 Outstanding Dean Award. Dr. Olsen was presented the honor March 13 at the APhA 2021 annual meeting, exposition and awards celebration, which was held remotely this year.

Nominations for the award came from students at their respective schools and colleges of pharmacy across the country.

“This award came as a wonderful surprise,” Dr. Olsen said in his remarks, noting that it was especially meaningful to have come from his students.

“As dean, it’s important to create an environment — and provide financial support — to advance student activities. But it takes a community of students and faculty working together to make these things happen. Throughout my career I’ve been impressed with the innovations of students, working with their faculty colleagues to advance our profession and the patients we serve,” Dr. Olsen said.

Sydney Tu, APhA-ASP national president, read from one of the nominations: “His dedication, commitment and support for student pharmacists and student organizations is unrivaled in the United States. Yes, there are other very good deans, but Dr. Olsen has made it a priority to work with students and meet their needs during these difficult times.”

UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, concurred: “The APhA is merely confirming what we already know — that Dr. Olsen is the best dean of pharmacy in the country. We are very happy to have him back home making a difference in the lives of our students, faculty and staff, and all of the patients that they serve.”

Dr. Olsen, an alumnus and longtime faculty member of the College of Pharmacy, returned to UNMC as dean of the college in 2019, following a stint as dean of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Pharmacy.
