Each year, nearly one million children are born worldwide with congenital heart disease. About 90% of these children lack access to cardiac care. In developing countries, this problem is compounded by the high prevalence of acquired heart disease associated with infectious etiologies such as HIV, rheumatic fever and tuberculosis. Survival to adulthood could reach 85% for children with congenital heart disease if pediatric cardiac care was incorporated into a health system’s continuum of care.
Access to cardiac diagnostics and subspecialty care are low in Ghana, making primary care doctors the front-line providers for a wide spectrum of pathologies including heart disease. This virtual conference will focus on improving diagnosis and management of pediatric heart disease and will serve to improve referral patterns among primary care providers in Ghana.
Presenters at the conference will include:
- Benjamin Acheampong, MD, assistant professor, UNMC Division of Pediatric Cardiology, Department of Pediatrics
- Shirley Delair, MD, associate dean for diversity, equity and inclusion; chief, UNMC Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases; director, pediatric residency global health track; associate professor, UNMC Department of Pediatrics
- Santosh Kaipa, MD, assistant professor, UNMC Division of Pediatric Critical Care, Department of Pediatrics
- Maria de Lourdes Eguiguren Jimenez, MD, assistant professor, UNMC Division of Pediatric Critical Care, Department of Pediatrics
