Nebraska Medicine, UNMC plan for extreme cold weather

As a result of the record cold weather in the state, utility companies are planning rolling blackouts to keep up with demand. Here is what you need to know:

  • Rolling blackouts will not affect our hospitals (Nebraska Medical Center and Bellevue Medical Center), Omaha-area research facilities or labs
  • If you are working from home, 30-60 minute blackouts are possible
  • Rolling blackouts may cause intermittent outages at other campus locations
  • Temperatures are being reduced in some administrative and education areas to account for the increased heating load
    • This will not affect patient care or research
  • Preparedness plans exist for emergency power and are available in needed
  • What can you do to help?
    • Close outside doors as quickly as possible
    • Look for any leaks, drips or signs of broken pipes, which may become more likely as it warms up outside
    • Immediately report any Facilities-related concerns by calling 402-552-3347 in Omaha or the facilities office at your campus location
    • If you have questions about your specific area, work directly with your manager
