Search begins for pathology-microbiology chair

From left, Howard Fox, MD, PhD, and Aviva Abosch, MD, PhD, will co-chair the search committee.

The UNMC College of Medicine has formed a committee to lead its search for a new chair of the Department of Pathology and Microbiology. Steven Hinrichs, MD, current Stokes-Shackleford Professor and chair, will step aside to concentrate on his research upon the arrival of a new chair, likely in the next academic year.

The committee is co-chaired by Aviva Abosch, MD, PhD, professor and chair of neurosurgery, and Howard Fox, MD, PhD, professor of neuroscience and senior associate dean for research.

Drs. Abosch and Fox made a joint statement on the search:

“The UNMC Department of Pathology and Microbiology has an extensive history of excellence in clinical service and education, and is both nationally and internationally recognized for its research programs in experimental pathology — including cancer biology — as well as microbiology and immunology.” Dr. Hinrichs “has recently announced his intention to retire after more than a decade as chair of the department, and will leave behind an extraordinary track record of accomplishments. It is truly an honor to be involved in identifying Dr. Hinrich’s successor, as the next chair of this storied department.”

Dr. Hinrichs is in his 13th year as chair, having served in the role since 2008.
