Take Care 101: Get regular exercise

During this unprecedented year, we all have experienced a range of emotions including sadness, anxiety, despair and grief. It’s important to “Take Care” of yourself, “Take Care” of your co-workers, loved ones and friends, and “Take Care” from a professional, when needed. Be aware of how much you are moving – or not — each day. During this busy season, the UNMC Campus Wellness team reminds you to “Take Care” of yourself to stay healthy, happier and more productive.

Today’s “Take Care” tip: Get regular exercise.

Exercise has been described as being “Miracle Gro for the brain” by a neuroscientist. It enhances neuronal function, reduces anxiety, improves mood and enhances executive function (which is the term used to describe higher brain functions like problem-solving, empathy and altruism.) Find something you enjoy and do it regularly. Even five minutes of exercise will help you feel better.

Share exercise tips — including those that can be done in five-minute increments — in the comments below.

When feeling sluggish I like to take a few minutes to walk stairs. It's amazing how 10 minutes of stair walking can increase the heart rate and give me more energy.

I've discovered I love strength and core metabolism exercises! Remember to stretch first. Modify if you need to. You're never too old to exercise!
