The UNMC White Coats for Black Lives (WC4BL) Chapter will hold its third meeting at noon on Tuesday, Nov. 24, via Zoom.

Ryan Mullane, DO, assistant professor in the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine-Nephrology, will speak about how physicians currently determine kidney function; existing bias in how race is used to determine kidney function; and alternative mechanisms, which do not utilize race to determine kidney function, that are being proposed to be brought to UNMC and Nebraska Medicine.
Medical student Yasmeen Bora, president of White Coats for Black Lives, said the group is excited to hear Dr. Mullane’s views on this topic.
“Race-based medicine is detrimental to the health of our patients and perpetuates racist stigma by telling people of color that our bodies are inherently ‘different’ and ‘broken,'” Bora said. “We are past due to address the history and continuing presence of racism in medicine. We hope students, residents, and staff will come away from this presentation with a better understanding of race-based medicine and ways to challenge it here at UNMC.”
The group also will continue its discussion of “Toward the Abolition of Biological Race in Medicine.”
