Raymond Bergan, MD, has accepted the position of deputy director of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. Dr. Bergan began his duties on Nov. 9.
Dr. Bergan comes to the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center from the Oregon Health and Sciences University (OHSU) and the Knight Cancer Institute, where he served as associate director for medical oncology, the head of the division of hematology and oncology and was the co-leader of the Knight Institute’s translational oncology program. While serving in these positions, Dr. Bergan also treated patients and led a research team that expanded the understanding of how early-stage cancer cells transform to travel throughout the body.
In addition to his deputy director duties, Dr. Bergan will see oncology patients. He will be a professor in the Eppley Institute, with his research lab located on the 10th floor in the Suzanne and Walter Scott Research Tower in the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center.
“Dr. Bergan brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to three major areas: leadership, cancer research and patient care,” said Kenneth Cowan, MD, PhD, director and physician-in-chief of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. “He possesses a passion and dedication to helping patients, and mentoring junior faculty and the next generation of cancer researchers.”
“I have been impressed with the growth and impact of the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and of the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center under Dr. Cowan’s leadership in particular,” Dr. Bergan said. “I consider it an honor to join these organizations and look forward to contributing to their impact on medical research and advances in patient care.”
