McGoogan librarians honored by MCMLA

For their contributions to the academic health science library profession, creativity, innovation and leadership Heather Brown and Teri Hartman were recognized with awards by the Midcontinental Chapter of the Medical Library Association (MCMLA) at their October business meeting.

Brown and Hartman are both associate professors with the Leon S. McGoogan Health Science Library at the UNMC.

Brown received the Bernice M. Hetzner Award for Excellence in Academic Health Science Librarianship for achieving a high level of professional accomplishment.

The Hetzner award was established in 1991 in honor of Bernice M. Hetzner, library director and professor emeritus at UNMC, who retired in 1973. The recipient must be a member of MCMLA and work in an academic health sciences library.

“When the award announcer began reading the bio of the Hetzner award recipient, I thought it sounded like me, but didn’t think it could be. I was very surprised to hear my name announced, to say the least,” Brown said.

“I remember all the talented librarians who received the award before me and am humbled to now be among them, particularly because the award is named after the great Bernice Hetzner, former director of the McGoogan Health Sciences Library. That makes it even more special. I can’t thank everyone enough for their support and guidance throughout my career,” she said.

Brown will receive a framed certificate and travel stipend.

For her significant contributions to health sciences and hospital libraries, Hartman received the MCMLA Outstanding Achievement Award.

“I feel like I won an Oscar!” Hartman said.

“It’s a testament to UNMC that both award winners come from McGoogan Health Sciences Library this year. That directly reflects on the supportive and innovative environment that our dean has created,” she said.

Hartman also will receive a travel stipend as well as a plaque.

“I want to congratulate both Heather and Teri for their contributions to librarianship and to the chapter and we are honored to have them represent the McGoogan Library and UNMC,” said Emily McElroy, dean, UNMC McGoogan Library.
