Dr. Marcelin joins national infectious disease board

The Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) announced on Oct. 8 its four newly elected board members, which includes Jasmine Marcelin, MD, assistant professor in the UNMC Department of Internal Medicine and an infectious disease physician with Nebraska Medicine. Dr. Marcelin is not only a new member, she also is the youngest board member in IDSA history.

“I am thrilled to be joining the IDSA Board of Directors,” Dr. Marcelin said. “This is an increasingly important time for infectious diseases clinicians, as we find ourselves in the midst of a pandemic. We are uniquely positioned to influence the outcome of this pandemic as we advocate for ID clinicians’ voices to be the experts involved with pandemic response and messaging. UNMC and Nebraska Medicine have already been leaders with this effort, and my joining the IDSA Board of Directors continues in this leadership.”

Dr. Marcelin also serves as associate medical director of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Program and co-director of digital innovation and social media strategy for UNMC.

Dr. Marcelin is an inaugural member of the IDSA Inclusion, Diversity, Access and Equity Taskforce and the inaugural vice-chair of IDSA’s Digital Strategy Advisory Group. She is driven by her own mission statement, “to create and support a health care workforce and graduate medical education environment that strives for excellence and values inclusion, diversity, access and equity as not only important, but necessary, for excellence (success),” which aligns with the priorities of the society.

“Ever since I completed my infectious diseases fellowship, I have been committed to becoming and staying engaged with my specialty society, because I recognize that there is a need for broader representation in decision making,” Dr. Marcelin said. “My work with the IDSA Inclusion, Diversity, Access and Equity Taskforce over the past few years has been impactful. I am looking forward to being able to continue supporting the society and infusing the principles of inclusion, diversity access and equality into everything the board does, and equally excited to learn more from my colleagues about this important work.”

The IDSA is an organization of physicians, scientists, and other health care professionals dedicated to promoting health through excellence in infectious diseases research, education, prevention, and patient care. The society, which has over 12,000 members, was founded in 1963 and is based in Arlington, Virginia.
