The department's 2020 graduation ceremony was celebrated virtually Friday, June 12 and Saturday, June 13. For Friday morning's events, the graduating residents and a few faculty and staff members were able socially distance in the Lauritzen Outpatient Center's auditorium, which can typically hold 75 people. They were joined via Zoom by all department faculty, residents and several family members.

Events Friday morning began with presentations by the graduating residents:

  • Emmett Gannon, MD: "The Efficacy of Liposomal Bupivacaine in Lumbar Spine Surgery"
  • Darin Larson, MD: "Pain Associated with Cemented and Uncemented Long-Stemmed Tibial Components in Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty"
  • Evan Larson, MD: "Retrospective Study of Donor-Site Morbidity Following Posterior Iliac Crest Bone-Graft Harvest in Lumbar Spinal Fusion Operations"
  • Joshua Locker, MD: "Postoperative Outcomes of Hip Fracture Surgery in Geriatric Patients on Clopidogrel or Warfarin at the Time of Surgery"
  • Dan Sveom, MD: "THAs With Highly Crosslinked Polyethylene at an Average of 15 year Follow-up in Patients Younger Than Age 50 Years"

These were followed by two presentations from this year's guest professor, Michael Millis, MD. Dr. Millis joined via Zoom from his home in Boston. He presented on "DDH/Hip Instability 2020: What One Should Know about North America’s Commonest Cause of Hip OA" and "Perspectives of a Hipologist: My Journeys with DDH and FAI; Midwest to Boston and Way Beyond." Following his presentations, several pediatric orthopaedic faculty presented cases via Zoom and had conversations about the cases with Dr. Millis, faculty and residents.

Saturday evening, the graduates, their spouses, and a few department faculty attended a socially distanced dinner party at Omaha Country Club. Matthew Teusink, MD, associate professor, was presented with the faculty of the year award. Gordon Roedel, MD, was presented with the junior resident of the year award.

Since the graduates' families could not attend the event in person, they joined the dinner via Zoom and also sent family pictures that were compiled for a slideshow following dinner. The evening's program also included pre-recorded roasts and a skit by PGY-4 residents.

We wish the graduates all the best in their future endeavors. The graduating residents and their chosen fellowships are:
